The blackout lining blocks light through the lined fabric. Narrow light gaps may remain around the outside edges of an inside-recess blind because installation clearance is required. An outside-recess installation with sufficient overlap generally provides better overall light coverage.

HOW TO MEASURE FOR INSIDE-RECESS INSTALLATION

An inside-recess Roman shade is installed within the window opening for a clean, fitted appearance.

1. Check that the window recess has enough clear depth for the Roman blind mechanism and installation clamps.

2. Measure the internal width of the recess in three places: across the top, middle and bottom.

3. Record the smallest of the three width measurements. Window recesses are not always perfectly square.

4. Measure the internal height in three places: on the left, through the center and on the right.

5. Record the longest of the three height measurements to ensure that the lowered blind covers the opening.

6. Use a rigid metal measuring tape for greater accuracy.

7. Check for projecting handles, locks, tiles or other obstructions that could interfere with the shade.

8. Enter the exact recess measurements in the order details email.

9. Clearly state “inside recess.”

10. Do not round measurements up to the next whole inch or centimeter.

A small fitting allowance will be required so that the Roman blind can operate correctly inside the recess.

HOW TO MEASURE FOR OUTSIDE-RECESS INSTALLATION

An outside-recess Roman shade is mounted on the wall or window frame above and around the window opening. This option can make the window appear larger and generally offers better privacy and light coverage.

1. Decide where the top of the Roman shade will be installed.

2. Measure the complete finished width that you want the shade to cover.

3. Where space permits, add approximately 2–4 inches or 5–10 cm of overlap on each side of the window opening.

4. Greater side overlap helps reduce light gaps and improves privacy.

5. Measure from the intended upper mounting point to the position where you want the lowered shade to finish.

6. Add coverage below the window opening where possible.

7. Allow sufficient space above the window for the Roman folds to stack when the blind is raised.

8. Enter the complete finished shade width and height in the order details email.

9. Clearly state “outside recess.”

For outside installation, enter the final measurements you want the complete Roman blind to have. Do not provide only the measurements of the window glass.
